The discussion among the seven-member jury helmed by the president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe centred on the importance of the issue of human rights during this tense period. The finalists include Vladimir Kara-Murza, a political prisoner and leading Russian democracy campaigner; Ukraine’s 5 AM Coalition, which gathers evidence of human rights abuses stemming from Russia’s invasion of the country; and Hungary’s Rainbow Coalition defending LGBTQIA+ rights. “This year’s selection reflects the central role that human rights play in the current European crisis,” says Michael Žantovský, jury member and executive director of the Václav Havel Library, which bestows the prize in cooperation with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and Nadace Charty 77.

The Other Europe  27/04/22

Dear Friends, After three years we have completed the international project The Other Europe, during which, in cooperation with partner institutions, we have processed and made public recordings of interviews shot in 1987 and 1988 behind the Iron Curtain, and in exile, with important representatives of the opposition and the arts, as well as random citizens. Over those three years we have prepared video, audio and text of 106 interviews in speakers’ native languages and English translation. Despite public health restrictions in the Covid period, we have jointly prepared 16 international conferences and public presentations in six Central and Eastern European states. More

Conference: Public Collective Citizens’ Protests, 1948–1989

  • Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
  • When: December 4, 2023, 09:00 – 15:30

Throughout the dictatorship of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in 1948–1989, various population groups came up with diverse forms of protest through which they expressed their attitudes toward a number of negative aspects of the societal reality of the time – from the dismal social situation, to the lack of religious and civil freedoms, to political demands. The conference will focus on the particular forms of collective public protest cultivated in different professional and socio-cultural settings. It will outline their typology and explore the changing social function of protest. The individual papers will present the evolution of the strategies of those involved, for example, in demonstrations, strikes, small farmers’ revolts, religious pilgrimages or petition drives.

The conference is organised by the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes

Twenty-Five Look Back: A Questionnaire for Czech Folk Names

Twenty-Five Look Back: A Questionnaire for Czech Folk Names

  • Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
  • When: December 5, 2023, 19:00 – 21:00

Many of them are in fact pioneers, the founders of the genre – the first Czech (Czechoslovak) folk generation. They started performing prior to normalisation, against which they then defined themselves as one man – or woman. Their songs contributed to the change of the regime, or at least to the fact that it was possible to somehow endure it. Even today they are not living off faded glory; many continue to create and perform, and their new material is not overshadowed by their earlier hits. They still have something to say. Publicist Aleš Palán therefore asked 25 of them questions that they do not usually face, creating a kind of folk questionnaire. Musical guest Vladimír Merta; others who can make it will provide a surprise.

Ceremonial Announcement of Essay Prize Winners

  • Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
  • When: December 7, 2023, 16:00 – 18:00

Announcement of the results of the 16th Václav Havel Library annual Student Essay Competition, attended by students and the jury.
The theme this year was: The second year in the shadow of war. How are we being affected by a war we know only from the media but are still part of?

Essays such as the The Power of the Powerless and A Word About Words, have become classic texts of Czech literature; they have been translated into tens of languages, and are among the few truly world-famous works of Czech culture. This is also why it is necessary to keep cultivating the essay genre in the Czech language not in the sense of imitating Václav Havel’s writing, but in the spirit of his courage to name unpleasant problems and search for unconventional solutions to them.

This year’s jury included the following figures from Czech public life: writer and journalist Adéla Knapová, writer and teacher Vratislav Maňák, writer and journalist Jiří Peňás, writer, lyricist, historian and columnist Petr Placák and Ukraine expert Lenka Víchová.

Petr Janyška: The Two Polands

  • When: December 8, 2023, 19:00 – 21:00

Polsko vejpůl (The Two Polands) is a book about contemporary Poland and its society and politics. It delivers the testimonies of major figures in Polish society on the situation that the country got into during the eight years of Jarosław Kaczyński’s rule, exploring the chasm it created between Poles. It paints a tangled web that the new government will need to untangle in order to bring Poland back into the European mainstream. And also the danger that, if it does not succeed, we may have a very unpleasant neighbour in a few years. Former president Lech Wałęsa, filmmaker Agnieszka Holland, politician and journalist Adam Michnik and a number of other Polish personalities from the left to conservatism share their views. The foreword was written by Petr Pithart. Political scientist Jiří Pehe and the book’s author, journalist and diplomat Petr Janyška, will debate the issues, while Ondřej Kundra from the weekly Respekt will moderate.

  • When: December 14, 2023, 19:00 – 21:00

A programme to commemorate the anniversary of the world premiere of Václav Havel’s The Garden Party, which rocked the Czechoslovak cultural scene 60 years ago. Of a successful, courageous, funny and topical play. A play via which the Theatre of the Absurd burst into Czechoslovak theatre.

Stage reading: Václav Havel’s Motomorphosis

A new disease is spreading! Motomorphosis, which is slowly but surely turning people into cars.

In this text from 1961 by an author then barely 25 years old, we already recognise the hallmarks of his poetics. The editor of the play, Lenka Jungmannová, will talk about the circumstances of the first sketches and plays by the budding dramatist and about the collaboration and the minor writerly rivalry between Ivan Vyskočil and Václav Havel.

The stage reading has been prepared by the ArtWay theatre company and directed by Kateřina Březinová.

Short film: The Garden Party

Aren’t some of the phenomena the author criticises and pokes fun at eternal?

The film is a distinctive interpretation of Havel’s play and a joint project of students from DAMU, FAMU and the VH Library. Directed by Kateřina Popiolková and Petr Vlček.

Václav Havel: Protest

Václav Havel: Protest

  • Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
  • When: December 18, 2023, 19:00 – 21:00

To sign or not to sign? A play about a tough question with an even tougher answer. A one-act play about a persistent dilemma, a fiendish question that characterises the playwright’s oeuvre. Out of uncertainty, out of a feeling of distress, out of fear of what tomorrow will bring, we lose the courage to fight for something. Staňek’s thinking aloud about whether or not to stand up for the arrested singer-songwriter and his future son-in-law is one of the greatest dialogues ever written by Václav Havel.

A Divadla na tahu theatre company production.

Directed by Andrej Krob and featuring Karel Beseda and Radek Bár.

The central focus of the Library’s publishing programme is the life and work of Václav Havel, his family and close collaborators and friends. For clarity, the programme is divided into six series: Václav Havel Library Notebooks, Václav Havel Library Editions, Student Line, Talks from Lány, Václav Havel Documents, Works of Pavel Juráček and Václav Havel Library Conferences. Titles that cannot be incorporated into any of the given series but which are nonetheless important for the Library’s publishing activities are issued independently, outside the series framework.

Václav Havel European Dialogues

The Václav Havel European Dialogues is an international project that aims to initiate and stimulate a discussion about issues determining the direction of contemporary Europe while referring to the European spiritual legacy of Václav Havel. This idea takes its main inspiration from Václav Havel’s essay “Power of the Powerless”. More than other similarly focused projects, the Václav Havel European Dialogues aims to offer the “powerless” a platform to express themselves and in so doing to boost their position within Europe.

The Václav Havel European Dialogues is planned as a long-term project and involves cooperation with other organisations in various European cities. Individual meetings, which take the form of a conference, are targeted primarily at secondary and third-level students, as well as specialists and members of the public interested in European issues.

Havel - Albright Transatlantic Dialogues

Since the first Václav Havel Transatlantic Dialogues at GLOBSEC and FORUM 2000 conferences last year, we have lost another stalwart advocate of the transatlantic bond and of the need to face threats to democracy and international order together on both sides of the Atlantic, the former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. In view of the close bond between Václav Havel and Madeleine Albright and, after Havel's death, between the Secretary and the Library, the Václav Havel Library, with the approval of Madeleine Albright's family, renamed and rebranded the program as The Havel-Albright Transatlantic Dialogues (HATD), after the two major figures with roots in Central Europe who have personified the bond. Together, Václav Havel and Madeleine Albright symbolize the transatlantic relationship and the fundamental values underpinning it perhaps better than any other two people in recent history. The upcoming Dialogues “The Indispensable Woman: The Legacy of Madeleine K. Albright”, at the FORUM 2000 conference on September 1, and at the “Havel and our Crisis” conference at Colby College, ME, on September 28, will thus become venues for a well-deserved tribute to the pair we all respected and admired.

Havel in a nutshell

The virtual exhibition Václav Havel in a Nutshell places the life story of Václav Havel in the broader cultural and historic context in four chronologically distinct chapters with rich visual accompaniment. The exhibition is supplemented by the interactive map Flying the World with Václav Havel, which captures in physical form Havel’s global “footprint”.

A database of all accessible interviews given to print media outlets by the dramatist, writer and political activist Václav Havel between the 1960s and 1989. The resulting collection documents the extraordinary life story of an individual, as well as capturing a specific picture of modern Czechoslovak history at a time when being a free-thinker was more likely to lead to jail than an official public post.

Pavel Juráček Archive

The Pavel Juráček Archive arose in February 2014 when his son Marek Juráček handed over six banana boxes and a typewriter case from his father’s estate to the Václav Havel Library. Thousands of pages of manuscripts, typescripts, photographs, documents and personal and official correspondence are gradually being classified and digitalised. The result of this work should be not only to map the life and work of one of the key figures of the New Wave of Czechoslovak film in the 1960s, but also to make his literary works accessible in the book series The Works of Pavel Juráček.

The aim of the Václav Havel Library is to ensure that Pavel Juráček finds a place in the broader cultural consciousness and to notionally build on the deep friendship he shared with Václav Havel. Soon after Juráček’s death in 1989 Havel said of him: “Pavel was a friend of mine whom I liked very much. He was one of the most sensitive and gentle people I have known – that’s why I cannot write more about him.”
