The French Institute in Prague in cooperation with the think tank EUROPEUM and the Václav Havel Library invites you to a debate on the future of European defence.

In order to reaffirm the strategic autonomy of the European Union, the French presidency of the EU aims to boost the readiness of European defence and security policy. With this in mind, a session of the European Council on 24 and 25 March should approve the Strategic Compass, the first white paper on European defence, which is aimed at creating a joint strategic culture and providing a framework for the realisation of specific tools and projects. At a time when NATO is overhauling its strategic conception, which should be finalised at a summit in Madrid in June 2022, France is advocating the merging of the two processes, with a view to ensuring strategic cohesion between the EU and NATO.

The debate offers an opportunity to explore in depth several questions: What are the French and Czech views on the strategy required for Europe to move beyond cooperation within its own borders to being a fully sovereign Europe with a strong position in the world? How can we create and implement the ambitious Strategic Compass, a bona fide white paper for European defence complementing NATO?

The discussion will be opened by the French ambassador to the Czech Republic, Mr. Alexis Dutertre.

Guests: Delphine Deschaux-Dutard, politics lecturer at Université Grenoble Alpes; Olivier-Rémy Bel, senior state official at the French Ministry of Defence and a former assistant to the minister of defence; Jan Havránek, head of the Czech Ministry of Defence’s Defence Policy and Strategy Section.

Chaired by Helena Truchlá, journalist (Economia).

The debate will be simultaneously interpreted from French into Czech.
