World Theatre Day was established in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). All of the ITI’s national centres, along with the entire international theatre community, celebrate this day annually on 27 March, with various national and international theatre events being organised to mark the occasion. One of the most important is the World Theatre Day International Message, the author of which is a world renowned theatre figure selected every year by the ITI. This year it has been written by the South African playwright Brett Bailey. In 1994 it was penned by Václav Havel.
