October 3, 2013

Illustration

On Wednesday 2 October 2013, a memorial to Václav Havel was unveiled on the campus of Georgetown University in Washington. Václav Havel’s Place is dominated by a piece by Bořek Šípek – consisting of a pair of seats between which a tree is growing – that symbolises, according to the artist, the openness to dialogue that was one of Václav Havel’s characteristic features. The ceremonial unveiling was also attended by Dagmar Havlová, Madeleine Albright and Suzanne Vega.

Václav Havel’s Place was created with the support of Georgetown University, the Czech Embassy in Washington, the Václav Havel and American Friends of the Czech Republic.
