Prague, 10 September 2026 – The Václav Havel Library is changing its name to the 1st Presidential Library. Neither its mission nor its address will change.

About the Library

The Václav Havel Library was established in 2004 on the initiative of Václav Havel and in accordance with his vision. Its original founders were Dagmar Havlová, Karel Schwarzenberg and Miloslav Petrusek. In September 2026, the institution’s name was changed to the 1st Presidential Library, a charitable trust.

According to its founding charter, the Library’s purpose is to preserve Václav Havel’s literary, dramatic and political legacy; to support research and education concerning his life, values and era; to foster the development of civil society; and to create a platform for discussion on freedom and democracy, not only in the Czech Republic. The Board of Trustees will announce the new name at a press conference on Monday 14 September 2026 at 3.00 pm at the Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 1.
