Between his marriage to Juliana Jirousová in 1976 and 1989, Ivan Martin Jirous was imprisoned four times for political reasons. During that period of separation, which totalled seven and a half years, correspondence represented the pair’s only regular communication. Though their correspondence was monitored and censored in terms of subject matter and form, the collection of 357 letters spanning 1977 to 1989 is revealing and filled with love, news about goings-on, poetry, criticism, humour and the shared belief that everything that was happening to the family had a higher meaning.
