How does the Czech question – which for two centuries defined Czech political and social development and always included the land and nation’s position in Europe – sound at the start of the 21st century? Instead of understanding it as a pragmatic question of building constitutionality and a civilly strong democratic society, we continue to perceive it as an existential question of to be, or not to be for the nation. However, the tension between democracy as a form of life and as a political system cannot be also applied to the issues of cultural identity and existence. The defence of constitutionality is therefore always based on principles of civic freedom and rights, limited government, the constitutional state and representative democracy, whose validity and cogency has been and always will be at stake in a post-national Europe.
