Psychologist Dana Němcová ranks among the most significant women in post-war Czech society. Her philosophy, outlook and character have influenced a great many well-known figures – in the 1970s and 1980s as a representative of the Czech dissent and a member of the Committee for the Defence of the Unjustly Prosecuted, and post-1989 as an MP and charity worker focused on helping others, particularly within the Committee of Good Will–Olga Havlova Foundation.

She has given scores of interviews in the last 30 years, including sharing her recollections on radio. Her memoir Dějse co dějnemáte se čeho bát (Whatever Happens, You Have Nothing to Fear) is a valuable contribution to the Czech national memory. The book is based on existinginterviews, with the testimonies carefully linked to create a fluent account of both Dana Němcová herself and over 60 years of Czech cultural, social and public life. A rich array of photographs represents a valuable element of the book. The volume, coming out in a co-edition with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, is edited by Jan Horník.

Jáchym Topol will moderate a talk with Dana Němcová and Jan Horník

Jan Šulc will introduce the evening.

Organised by the Václav Havel Library in cooperation with the Torst publishing house.
