- When: January 5, 2026, 19:00 – 21:00

Change My Mind – screening and debate
- Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
- When: January 7, 2026, 19:00 – 21:00
At the beginning, a call was published: “Do you think the war in Ukraine is a hoax? That the media is lying about the death toll and the consequences of the 'special military operation' in Ukraine? Come to the audition and become the heroes of a new movie.” The film crew ventured into the center of the military conflict in October 2024 with three “heroes” – supporters of Vladimir Putin, to see for themselves what the war in Ukraine looks like. Do you want to see the reactions of the doubters as missiles fly above their heads; they hide in shelters, walk among mass graves, talk to children in the underground school in a subway, to wounded soldiers or suffering survivors?
Join us for a “grand patriotic journey.” Change My Mind is a documentary road movie with comedic elements following a journey from the still-safe Czech Republic to the war-torn Kharkiv and Donbas—the war in Ukraine without censorship.
After the film screening, the director Robin Kvapil will be in discussion with producer Jakub Drocár and criminologist Petr Pojman.

Aleš Palán: Šumava Novel
- Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
- When: January 8, 2026, 19:00 – 21:00
Aleš Palán will introduce his novel, inspired by the bestseller Raději zešílet v divočině, rozhovory s šumavskými samotáři. Once again, the readers will be captivated by the dramatic Šumava and will venture into an unusual environment, to a remote solitude without electricity and access roads, where a family of five lives.
The heroine of the story is Kateřina, and the day everything falls apart is her forced start to school. Living with the outside world is not without problems, but now the girl feels judgment and contempt. But she refuses to become the victim and answers how she was taught at home. “Whoever says that the strongest instinct is sexual is only revealing to himself that he has never fought,” Kateřina knows.
This story avoids idylls. It’s about loneliness, life-giving connection, but also about betrayal. And the most stubborn can be defeated.
The author will be in discussion with the host of the evening, Jáchym Topol.

Debate: Independent media as a guarantor and insurance for democracy
- Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
- When: January 14, 2026, 19:00 – 21:00
The incoming government wants to cancel the fee for public service media and fundamentally change the system of their financing. Yet their representatives still insist that they want to maintain the independence of the Czech Television and the Czech Radio, so are there grounds for concern about its threat? And can the planned changes affect the work of the Czech Television and the Czech Radio? Public broadcasting is often labeled as one of the pillars of democracy, but what exactly does that mean? What exactly have the countries where public broadcasting has been stripped off its independence lost?
Guests: David Klimeš, journalist working at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University, and Vratislav Dostál, political reporter and commentator for Aktuálně.cz.
The debate is moderated by Jáchym Topol.

Ilham Tohti: Jailed for Fighting for Dialogue, Ethnic Harmony and Rule of Law
- Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
- When: January 16, 2026, 19:00 – 21:00
Six of the 13 laureates of the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize to date are currently in prison, including Professor Ilham Tohti. Ilham Tohti is a publicly known Uyghur intellectual from China and the laureate of the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize for 2019. For over 20 years, he has been engaged in developing dialogue and understanding between the Uyghurs and the Chinese. For this, he was sentenced to life in prison in a two-day rigged trial in 2014. His family has not heard from him since 2017, when he was denied contact with them and his lawyers.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Ilham Tohti’s arrest, the Václav Havel Library has organized a commemorative and advocacy event with the participation of his daughter, Jewher, who lives in exile and has actively participated in the fight for her father’s liberation. The saddening 12th anniversary of his unjust imprisonment will be marked at the Václav Havel Library by French sinologist, journalist and writer Marie Holzman, Senior Researcher at the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Science and President of the European Uyghur Institute Dilnur Reyhan, Chinese lawyer and political activist Teng Biao, who as a member of Weiquan lawyers - Rights Defence Network in China, became a finalist of the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize 2013, and Ilham Tohti’s tireless defender and the president of the Ilham Tohti Institute Enver Can. The event will be opened by Senator Pavel Fischer, who was among those who nominated Ilham Tohti for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Magdalena Slezáková, foreign desk editor at Deník N, will moderate the discussion.
The evening will take place in English without interpretation.

Psychiatry: Abused and Abusive
- Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
- When: January 19, 2026, 19:00 – 21:00
Introduction of the book Systémově zneužitá a zneužívající československá psychiatrie v soft-sovětském stylu (1948–1989) by Miroslav Vodrážka. Using specific examples, the author shows not exceptional, but systematic abuse of psychiatry during communism. It included not only the abuse of medical expertise or the control of leading psychiatrists by the KGB, but mainly the objectivist psychiatric approach in which a patient was a “clinical case” rather than a citizen of a historical and social world.
The author Miroslav Vodrážka will be in discussion with the former Head Physician at the Bohnice Hospital, Zdeněk Bašný. The evening will be introduced by historian Petr Blažek and moderated by author Jáchym Topol.
The Václav Havel Library, in cooperation with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (ÚSTR) and the Twentieth Century Memorial Museum (Muzeum paměti XX. století).

We invite you to the launch of the book Světlem proti temnotě, which tells the story of Czech aid to Ukraine after the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. The book was co-written by Jan Heřmánek, one of the main figures of the organization Team 4 Ukraine, and journalist David Miřejovský.
Czech volunteers, with the immense support of people at home, head straight to the front-line units of Ukrainian defenders and civilians living close to the battle lines. They bring humanitarian and medical aid and document war crimes. Thanks to the powerful support of the Czech public, their missions have real effects.
The patron of the book will be Vladimír Dzuro, a war crime investigator.

The Free Academy: Jana Vahalíková – The Book as the Imprint of the Age
- Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00

An introduction to the historical roots of books, from medieval manuscripts and the significant historical legacy of graphic designers of the 20th century, to the contemporary view of books in contemporary media.
Jana Vahalíková studied Book Culture and Typography at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design under Professor Jan Solpera. Since 1997, she has been a part of Studio Marvil. Between 2001 and 2015, she was the Art Director of TYPO Magazine. For the past ten years, she has focused on book production in collaboration with many publishing houses. Besides individual novel titles, she also works on book series: Edice AAA, Česká knižnice, and Edice moderní dějiny. The Václav Havel Compass: On Searching
- Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
- When: January 26, 2026, 19:00 – 21:00
Why is Václav Havel’s thinking still inspiring? What questions does it raise for us? What challenges does it present to us? What solutions does it offer?
The first evening of our debate series will focus on the theme of searching. Who am I? Where am I going and where do I belong? What am I a part of? The incessant searching, born from uncertainty and doubt, is also a permanent challenge: to think about oneself, to work on oneself, to remain oneself.
A discussion about opinions and doubts will be led by two people from different generations: philosopher Daniel Kroupa and philosopher Tereza Matějčková.

Na Solar. Introducing the anthology of the best Czech short stories
- Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
- When: January 27, 2026, 19:00 – 21:00
The Argentinian writer Julio Cortázar once said that while a novel can win by points, a short story wins by a knockout blow. A good short story will simply send you to your knees, and count you up. Exactly these types of short stories were collected by writer Jan Němec in a large anthology of the best post-revolutionary short stories called Na solar.
Thirty short stories by thirty authors tell the story of not only Czech literature, but also Czech society after 1989.
Guests: Marek Šindelka and Miloš Urban.
Hosted by Jan Němec.

An Evening with Radio Free Europe: They finally released them, but what’s next?
- Where: Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 110 00
- When: January 29, 2026, 19:00 – 21:00
In recent months, there have been several waves of political prisoners returning from prisons in Belarus, Russia, and the occupied territories of Ukraine. But what happens to these people who have spent many years in prison? It is clear that the concern for them cannot end with their release, because they return in poor health and psychological conditions. Simultaneously, they face uncertain futures, whether it is the risk of repeated arrest or forced exile, having to adapt to life in a foreign country. What does the return to normal life look like for political prisoners currently? Who is involved in their care, and how can help be provided?
The discussion with Alsu Kurmasheva (RFE/RL), Klára Šimáčková Laurenčíková (former Government Commissioner for Human Rights) and Nadiia Ivanova (Člověk v tísni) will be moderated by Jan Blažek (Post Bellum).

Václav Havel European Dialogues
The Václav Havel European Dialogues is an international project that aims to initiate and stimulate a discussion about issues determining the direction of contemporary Europe while referring to the European spiritual legacy of Václav Havel. This idea takes its main inspiration from Václav Havel’s essay “Power of the Powerless”. More than other similarly focused projects, the Václav Havel European Dialogues aims to offer the “powerless” a platform to express themselves and in so doing to boost their position within Europe.
The Václav Havel European Dialogues is planned as a long-term project and involves cooperation with other organisations in various European cities. Individual meetings, which take the form of a conference, are targeted primarily at secondary and third-level students, as well as specialists and members of the public interested in European issues.

Havel - Albright Transatlantic Dialogues
Since the first Václav Havel Transatlantic Dialogues at GLOBSEC and FORUM 2000 conferences last year, we have lost another stalwart advocate of the transatlantic bond and of the need to face threats to democracy and international order together on both sides of the Atlantic, the former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. In view of the close bond between Václav Havel and Madeleine Albright and, after Havel's death, between the Secretary and the Library, the Václav Havel Library, with the approval of Madeleine Albright's family, renamed and rebranded the program as The Havel-Albright Transatlantic Dialogues (HATD), after the two major figures with roots in Central Europe who have personified the bond. Together, Václav Havel and Madeleine Albright symbolize the transatlantic relationship and the fundamental values underpinning it perhaps better than any other two people in recent history. The upcoming Dialogues “The Indispensable Woman: The Legacy of Madeleine K. Albright”, at the FORUM 2000 conference on September 1, and at the “Havel and our Crisis” conference at Colby College, ME, on September 28, will thus become venues for a well-deserved tribute to the pair we all respected and admired.

Havel in a nutshell
The virtual exhibition Václav Havel in a Nutshell places the life story of Václav Havel in the broader cultural and historic context in four chronologically distinct chapters with rich visual accompaniment. The exhibition is supplemented by the interactive map Flying the World with Václav Havel, which captures in physical form Havel’s global “footprint”.
Gallery of key figures of Oldřich Škácha
The Gallery of Key Figures of Oldřich Škácha presents unique and previously unknown photographs of Ludvík Vaculík, Jan Werich, Milan Kundera, Marta Kubišová and many other important personalities as an authentic and original source of knowledge about our modern history.
Vladimir Hanzel's revolution
Collage of recollections, images and sound recordings from Vladimír Hanzel, President Václav Havel’s personal secretary, bringing the feverish atmosphere of the Velvet Revolution to life.
Václav Havel Interviews
A database of all accessible interviews given to print media outlets by the dramatist, writer and political activist Václav Havel between the 1960s and 1989. The resulting collection documents the extraordinary life story of an individual, as well as capturing a specific picture of modern Czechoslovak history at a time when being a free-thinker was more likely to lead to jail than an official public post.
Pavel Juráček Archive
The Pavel Juráček Archive arose in February 2014 when his son Marek Juráček handed over six banana boxes and a typewriter case from his father’s estate to the Václav Havel Library. Thousands of pages of manuscripts, typescripts, photographs, documents and personal and official correspondence are gradually being classified and digitalised. The result of this work should be not only to map the life and work of one of the key figures of the New Wave of Czechoslovak film in the 1960s, but also to make his literary works accessible in the book series The Works of Pavel Juráček.
The aim of the Václav Havel Library is to ensure that Pavel Juráček finds a place in the broader cultural consciousness and to notionally build on the deep friendship he shared with Václav Havel. Soon after Juráček’s death in 1989 Havel said of him: “Pavel was a friend of mine whom I liked very much. He was one of the most sensitive and gentle people I have known – that’s why I cannot write more about him.”
